York boys track excels at sectional meet

The York boys track team finished in a tie for second place at Friday’s Lake Park Class 3A sectional.

The Dukes posted a score of 84 points, finishing behind only Wheaton Warrenville South, and most importantly qualified five individuals and a relay for next weekend’s state meet.

Charlie Kern was the star of the show, winning the 800-meter run in 1:56.57 while also placing first in the mile with a time of 4:26.73.

Obi Nnam won the high jump after clearing 6-4 and Jackson Bode was the champion in the 3,200 after crossing in 9:35.46. Both Calvin Widener (shot out) and Jonathan Tanner (200) placed second, as did the 4×200 relay.


Both the Knights and Trojans competed at the Seneca Class 1A sectional on May 17.

IC came is as the runner-up with 92 points. Jordan Rowell won the long jump and 100 and was second in the 400. Also placing first was Dan McCann in the shot put while the 4×100 and 4×200 relays also emerged victorious.

Xavier Ross put on quite a show for Timothy Christian, winning three events. He came in first in both hurdles events and also won the 200 in a time of 23.03.

Girls track


The Dukes 4×800 relay team of Julie Biggins, Katherine Tomaska, Emma Kern and Sarah May competed in the finals at the Class 3A IHSA state track meet and finished 12th with a time of 9:48.94.

Jeanette Morley and Molly Evans competed in the prelims of the high jump and triple jump respectively.


The Knights and the Trojans each had a strong contingent of athletes competing in the prelims of the Class 1A state track meet.

Timothy Christian’s Olivia Hoekstra was the lone one to advance to the finals and she notched all-state honors in the 400 with a sixth-place showing in 59.13.

Also for the Trojans, Elise Terpstra was in the 800 prelims and Alyse Schnurr competed in the 100 high hurdles.

The 4×800 relay of Terpstra, Valerie Hoekstra, Jill Forgac and Rachel Stoll posted a time of 10:45.87. The 4×400 quartet of Olivia Hoekstra, Valerie Hoekstra, Forgac and Stoll had a time of 4:26.63.

For IC, Jaida Smith competed in both the triple jump and long jump, Nailah Landon and Mia Valenzuela each participated in the high jump, Gabi Zanoni was in the shot put and Kiersten King ran the 200-meter dash.

The 4×100 relay of Smith, Landon, Olivia Slavin and King posted a time of 51.49 in the prelims while the 4×200 grouping of Smith, Slavin, Hannah Johnson and King finished in 1:53.99.



The Knights won a Class 1A sectional title with a 2-1 win over DePaul College Prep on May 19 in Elmhurst.

IC advances to Tuesday’s Concordia University supersectional against Chicago (University) with a state berth on the line.


The Dukes captured a Class 3A regional championship with a 3-0 win over Fenwick in Friday. Maggie Bleyer scored twice and Jenna Dvorak also had a goal. York plays Downers Grove North in a sectional semifinal on May 24.



Hosting a Class 1A regional championship game on the turf field at Plunkett Park, the Knights knocked off Regina Dominican 7-0 on Saturday. The squad will now head to the Lisle sectional.

Kayla Fabre-Cournane tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out seven. Brooklyn Campos led the offense with two hits and three RBIs.

IC is 19-12 on the spring.


The Dukes, who finished up the regular season with a mark of 15-10, begin the postseason on May 23 at the Niles West regional.



The Dukes ended the regular season in thrilling fashion, producing a walk-off 8-7 win over Elk Grove on May 18.

York improved to 21-10 on the spring and will open the playoffs on May 25 against Niles North.


Both the Knights and Trojans were set to play in regional final games on Saturday but they were each postponed to May 22 due to the rain.

Boys tennis


The senior duo of Nathan Daniels and Trevor Hoogendorn captured the doubles championship at the Class 1A sectional the Trojans hosted on Saturday.

They prevailed in straight sets in the final. As a team, Timothy Christian finished in a tie for second.
