ELMHURST – For this year’s traditional Garden Walk and Faire, the Elmhurst Garden Club is going beyond local homes to include the gardens at York High School.

The Garden Walk and Faire takes place from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 9. The Faire is held at Wilder Park, 175 S Prospect Ave. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event at any of the locations below.

The walk will showcase gardens of six homeowners, each with unique personality and charm, ranging from grand to modest in size. Visitors will be able to appreciate a selection of the different approaches to residential gardening currently going on in the community.

“Working at the high school has been a great experience for us volunteers. It’s for a good cause, it’s the way of the future.”

For the Elmhurst Garden Club, including the gardens at York High School is an opportunity to show the fruits of a project that started about three years ago when the school expressed interest in starting a garden. The vegetable garden grew and it now includes three sites with a butterfly garden and a sensory garden, showcasing a variety or perennials and native plants.

Lisa Peterson is one of the Garden Club members who volunteers at the gardens at York High School. She is a horticulturist and landscape designer, so she played an important role in the design of the gardens.

“Working at the high school has been a great experience for us volunteers,” Peterson said. “It’s for a good cause, it’s the way of the future.”

The other part of the event takes place at Wilder Park, where a variety of vendors will be selling gardening accessories, art, and a selection of one-of-a-kind perennials for home gardens. The faire will be held from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

Most of the proceeds from the Elmhurst Garden Club Walk and Faire will benefit the Mildred Hartney College Scholarship Fund, as well as other community programs and initiatives. The scholarship aims to encourage interest in horticulture through education, as well as provide an outlet for creative expression.
