ELMHURST – In the span of about an hour, a raging fire turned VIP Occasions from a bridal shop to a hollowed out wreck.

The blaze, which started about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at 351 N. York St., sent flames and massive clowds of smoke into the air. Fire departments from around the area responded to assist the Elmhurst Fire Department.

As of 7 p.m., ladder trucks and firefighters at ground level were still pouring multiple streams of water into the building in an effort to extinguish the flames.

According to a statement from the city of Elmhurst, there were no injuries reported in the blaze, and its cause was undetermined.

Unofficial word from responders on the scene was that the firefighting efforts were likely to continue well into the evening.

York Street was closed to through traffic from North Avenue north to Fremont, and many side streets in the vicinity were closed as well.

A strong wind was consistently blowing the smoke toward the neighborhood directly to the east of the bridal shop, raising a strong possibility that homeowners in the area, even if they managed to avoid fire damage, might have smoke damage to their homes.
